The Castle Inn

Historic coincidence?

The Castle Inn was previously The Compasses Inn, but prior to that it was Wigmore's general store. Oddly enough, there was an original Castle Inn, a hotel destroyed by fire and subsequently demolished in the late 18 or early 1900's, and this stood on the site of the current general store...

About The Castle Inn

A small, Rural 'Gastro Pub' offering Good Food & Fine Dining in the Herefordshire Village of Wigmore.

The Castle Inn is a small, 30 seat restaurant with a loyal following and a growing reputation for good food and great value in a relaxed and welcoming country setting.

The Village

The village of Wigmore and its Castle, now little more than a ruin, are situated on The Mortimer Trail in the North of Herefordshire, and nestled against the green, rolling hills of The Welsh Marches. The wonderful scenery, paired with the area's rich and often turbulent history, make it a popular destination for walkers and cyclists. But Wigmore is not just a tourist destination. Located within easy reach of Ludlow, Leominster and Knighton, The Castle Inn provides ample, on site parking for the growing number of diners who have already discovered this little gem, hidden away on the English / Welsh Border.

Wigmore Castle itself has a fascinating history dating back to the end of the Norman Conquest (around 1070), and was a pivotal strategic stronghold during the Welsh uprisings, the Wars of The Roses and the English Civil War. We have placed links to more information in the side bar.
